Luther Vandross Estate Strikes Deal With Primary Wave Music

The estate of legendary R&B singer Luther Vandross has struck a wide-ranging partnership with Primary Wave Music that sees the company acquiring a stake in the late artist’s publishing, master recording income stream, and name and likeness rights. The company will continue a long-term partnership with the estate to manage all assets.

Variety reports that Primary Wave has bought a ‘sizeable’ stake in the music publishing catalog of prolific songwriter Gerry Goffin. The deal includes a number of songs Goffin co-wrote with Carole King such as the No.1 hit Take Good Care of My Baby, The Loco-Motion, and Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow which was famously recorded by the Shirelles in 1961. The deal also encompasses several songs Goffin wrote with other songwriters such as Russ Titelman, Barry Goldberg, and Michael Masser which include the Oscar nominated Theme From Mahogany (Do You Know Where You’re Going To) and the Golden Globe nominated So Sad the Song.

Raleigh Music Publishing announced that it acquired the catalog of American song writer Lee Morris, including the Billboard #1 hit, “Blue Velvet” which was made famous by Tony Bennett and Bobby Vinton. Also included in the deal are Bobby Vinton-recorded songs as such "Satin," "Someone I Used To Know," and "Tina"; Elvis Presley cuts like "Big Love, Big Heartache," "Barefoot Ballad" and "You Can't Say No In Acapulco"; Frank Sinatra's "If I Only Had a Match" (with Al Jolson) and "You Forgot All the Words"; and Nat King Cole's "I Don't Want to See Tomorrow."

Primary Wave announced a new partnership Monday, October 11, 2021, with the estate of the late singer and actor, Bing Crosby, known for bellowing the definitive version of Irving Berlin’s “White Christmas.” In the deal, Primary Wave acquired a stake in assets including the Bing Crosby Archives featuring thousands of recordings (many unreleased), artist royalties, writer royalties, and rights to radio, television and film productions, most notably the 1954 classic “White Christmas.” Primary Wave has also acquired a stake in Crosby’s name, likeness and rights of publicity.
